“Leading in a South African landscape”.

~ Reflections on a year of contemplating “Leading through Boundaries”

~ Pippa Jarvis

To me, few things say “South Africa” like a windmill at sunset. The image reminds me of long road trips, Karoo views and weekends in the Magaliesburg. After some contemplation they now also speak to me at a different level.

Looking at a windmill now, I think of how it can be an allegory of South African leadership.

Consider if you will the attached image of my windmill at home.

3 sturdy legs, deeply embedded in the rich African soil, a tri partite alliance anchored firmly to offer stability and security as the winds of change blow.

A turning assortment of fins all leaning to the direction of the wind – their job is to gather momentum together so that the pump can drive deep below the surface and return with life giving, life sustaining, unpolluted water.

To me South Africans need to work together, each in our own direction but focussed around a central goal – we need to go deep, delve into the truth of our common heritage and humanity and resurface with a fresh understanding of how to bring new life to our nation. We need each other if things are going to work and we need to get beneath the superficial, polite “crust” that forms much of our day to day relationship.

I live in hope.

These words are often accredited to our beloved Madiba - whilst not his own, the sentiment is shared

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
